SOC Tech Updates

Gear Rental from the Cage

There are new COVID-19 check-out and check-in procedures for the Cage (SOC's Equipment Room in the Media Production Center). Please read and follow carefully. Should you have any questions, please call The Cage at 202-885-2020 for assistance.

Here's what you'll do:

  • As of July 1st, 2020, AU's campus has been officially open. All facilities have been scrubbed clean and most are set up for COVID-19 physical distancing protocols, so not to worry.

In order to check in the gear, to the Cage, you will be required to do the following things:

  • Wear a mask the entire time you are on AU campus, even when walking outside.

  • We prefer you wear gloves, also, but they are not required.

  • Bring your AU ID.

Here are the procedures we will use:

  • We will give each person a thirty minute (30 minute) window in which to come and check in or check out your gear. You must contact the Cage by phone @ 202-885-2020 to request a day and time to come by. You may also email the Cage at socequipmentroom@american.edu. Request two possible dates and times because you may not get your first choice.

  • Make sure you get a reply if you have to leave a message or email.

  • The Cage will be open from 9:30am until 5pm Tuesday through Friday. Saturdays from 10am until 2pm.

  • The doors of the Media Production Center are still locked, so you will have to go down the ramp around the side of the building to the back door.

  • There you will call our staffer at 202-885-2020, the main number for The Cage. When you do, our staffer will come out and open the door for you.

  • When called, you will place your AU ID on the table in the lobby outside the Cage.

  • If returning gear, set your gear and your AU ID on the table or counter outside the Cage.

  • Our staffer will take them, check you in after checking the gear and then return your ID to the table.

  • You will then retrieve it, bid adieu to Jimmy and head out. He or Jeffrey will contact you if anything is missing or broken.

  • If requesting gear, our staffer will take your ID, confirm gear requested, and then bring it to you, along with your AUID.

  • If returning gear, anything is broken or damaged, you are responsible for paying for the repair or replacement of both.

  • You will then retrieve gear, confirm all is in working order, bid adieu to Jimmy and head out.

  • Remember, you are responsible for "Checking the Gear Before You Clear...the Building." We're responsible for replacing any broken gear you discover before you leave MPC. You're responsible if you find out something's broken or not working once you leave MPC. You're also responsible for keeping all gear in working condition.

  • Gear can be checked out now for four (4) days per reservation, instead of the customary two (2) days.

Adobe Creative Cloud
SOC has successfully acquired Adobe Creative Cloud student licenses for those students of ours taking production courses this fall. For faculty who are teaching production and design courses this semester, this is what you need to know:
  • The student licenses are only good through the end of fall semester 2020.
  • If a student already has an Adobe CC subscription and has media they've worked on saved to their cloud account, we advise them to keep their own account. Switching may cause them to lose their stored media.

Submit your class roster complete with AU student emails on it to Zack Prichard at prichard@american.edu. Adobe only accepts AU student emails for this program. Zack and Matt Fries will input the AU student emails into Adobe. Once a student's name is inputted, they will receive an email from Adobe instructing them to click through and complete the signup process. This process may take through next week for us to complete.
If a student hasn't received an email from Adobe, have them check their spam folder to see if the Adobe email was sent there. If it's NOT, go to adobe.com and try to sign in. If they can, they're good to go. If they cannot sign in, have them contact Zack via email, soctechline@american.edu, or call us at 202-885-3570. Please make sure they leave a detailed message. You will also be notified when your class roster is fully input into Adobe.
